History of Paternity Testing Technology - a brief history of 20th Century Paternity Testing Technology.

Brief description of Paternity testing via PCR - a short description of how modern DNA paternity testing is done using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology.

Detailed description of Paternity testing via PCR - a more detailed description of how modern DNA paternity testing is done using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technology

Genetic Codes Unraveled: New Clues to Human History - an article from Ancestry Magazine on how DNA technology is revolutionizing how people think about researching Geneologies.

Courts Favor Ancient Paternity Rule Over DNA Tests - Wall Street Journal article about the hesitancy of courts to embrace new technology

Paternity Information Page - lots of definitions and links

Involuntary Fatherhood - one hour Talk of the Nation program on National Public Radio. This link requires the RealAudio program.

Chile unveils new 'paternity law' - A new law in Chile gives the courts powers to order men to undergo DNA testing in paternity disputes.

The Statistics of Paternity Testing - a brief induction to the folies of Bayes Theorem in determining paternity.

Cole v. Cole - 328 S.E.2d 446, 74 N.C. App. 247 (1985) - more on the application of Bayes Theorem in paternity testing.

The Power to Divide: Stem Cells - excerpt from a recent National Geographic article on stem cell technology, their use and the ethical debate. I have a print version of the entire article if you want it

The Science Behind the Human Genome Project - Basic Genetics, Genome Draft Sequence, and Post-Genome Science

Gene Gateway: Exploring Genes and Genetic Disorders - a fantastic learning resource on human genetics supported by the Human Genome Project.

Your Genes, Your Choices: Exploring the Issues raised by Genetic Research - describes the Human Genome Project, the science behind it, and the ethical, legal, and social issues that are raised by the project. download pdf

Genetic Counseling - Genetic counselors work as members of a healthcare team, providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions. They identify families at risk, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence, and review available options with the family.

John Coltrane's Giant Steps
- 23 consecutive chords - 23 pairs of chromosomes

The Genetics & Public Policy Center at John Hopkins University has an excellent website that provides information and links on all types of information related to the application of genetic technologies including genetic testing, government policy and public opinion.

Reading Genes for Disease - NPR did an excellent series on genetic testing in the Spring of 2004. Diseases covered include Huntington's, Cystic Fibrosis and Breast Cancer. "A new world of genetic medicine has opened up, with tests that can provide people with a glimpse of their medical future. In a series of interviews, NPR's Joe Palca talks with people who have faced a decision to find out about their genes."

Short Bio of Strindberg - Here is a short bio of Fadren author August Strindberg - interesting parallels between Strindberg's mother and father and the Captain and Laura in Fadren.

Schizophrenia Information - Portal to Schizophrenia developed by Stockholm's Human Brain Informatics Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institutet. This site contains much interesting information including an introduction to the disease, treatment and history.

Details on Chromosomes from the Genome News Network - Lots of good summary information on basic genetics and applied technologies. "The Genome News Network (GNN) produces a lively and trusted online magazine that covers important developments in genomics research around the world. Our news coverage focuses on stories about genomics and human medicine, as well as the ways in which scientists are using genomics to find biological solutions to energy needs and environmental
problems."

Putting DNA to Work - is an exhibit at the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences. The website is full of useful information and activities.

Dancing Helix - that's right...Double Helix "sculpture" - check out the video clip.

Genetics Animations - Link page for animations for various molecular genetic processes and technologies. Some are better than others, but its important to get a visual image of these processes, which frequently depend on precise spatial relations in real life.

Bayes Theorem - the statistical backbone of all paternity testing.

Fathers more involved when paternity is established in the hospital - short abstract of a recent paper in the Journal of Marriage and Family. Once again demonstrates the importance of biological paternity to many. Also mentions the establishment (in 1993) in the US of federally required in-hospital paternity establishment programs, indicating that DNA based paternity tests were already widespread by 1993. John Coltrane's Discography - This John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 - July 17, 1967) discography is largely based on Bill Cole's Coltrane discography as published in his book "John Coltrane", and features mostly studio recordings, although I've added few live recordings.

Coltrane Ascension - "Ascension is the single recording that placed John Coltrane firmly into the avant-garde. Whereas, prior to 1965, Coltrane could be heard playing in an avant vein with stretched out solos, atonality, and a seemingly free design to the beat, Ascension throws most rules right out the window with complete freedom from the groove and strikingly abrasive sheets of horn interplay. "

After Coltrane - divergent innovative directions after Coltrane range from Miles Davis 1969 release of "Bitches Brew" , a fusion of jazz, funk and rock to the Minimalists including Philip Glass and Steve Reich.
