Dr. Ullom earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and is professor of theatre at Vanderbilt University.

He has worked as a dramaturg with award winning playwrights and directors at the Actor's Theatre of Louisville, including Tony Kushner, Henry David Hwang and Ann Bogart.
